Lady Bird Johnson was born Claudia Alta Taylor in Karnack, Texas on December 22, 1912. Her parents were Thomas Jefferson Taylor and Minnie Pattillo Taylor, and she had two older brothers, Tommy and Tony. Her mother died when she was only five years old, and her Aunt Effie Pattillo moved to Karnack to look after her. William Loren Batt, Jr., was born in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1916. In 1938, he graduated from Harvard University, and became a member of the Temporary National Economic Committee. In 1941, he became the Assistant to the Expeditor of Lend Lease in London, England. During the 1940s and 1950s, Batt was a government official dealing with labor issues.
